Scenes often seem contrived, and the finale is a total cop-out. Despite its ambitions to the contrary, "The Brave One" still comes across as a dressed-up "Death Wish" rehash, only with lots (and lots) of close-ups of Foster emoting as Erica wrestles with her inner pain. It isn't quite as intriguing as it might sound.

Will he figure out that Erica's the vigilante he's seeking? And, if he does, what will he do about it? A kindred spirit, except he still believes in enforcing the law. In the meantime, she befriends a police detective, Sean Mercer (Terrence Howard), who's investigating the killings she has committed and who's frustrated by the way the law (or the manipulation of the law) sometimes protects the guilty. She seems resigned to follow this dangerous path to the end. She recognizes that the old Erica is gone, and what's left is a woman full of fear and rage. She feels anguish over what she's doing, but it becomes a compulsion. And it does in at least one regard: the way the victim-turned-vigilante is portrayed by Foster as someone who is destroyed by violence and emerges as a different person.
